What is the difference between a Hot-Spot and a wireless router from a retail store?

A wireless hotspot allows the following types of access
  • Public users via our AAA accounting server and online credit card payment gateway
  • Public user with internet vouchers / scratch cards or emailed cards
  • Private users (closed user group) that is allowed access e.g. staff and hotel managers etc
  • Note: A retail wireless router either allows everyone and anyone access or allows anyone you you give a password out to, to your internet, private network and PCs.
  • If I sell wireless access can it be used at another hotspot location?

We are flexible, you choose whether you want your access shared.

What do I need to setup a Hot-Spot at my location?

    You will need the following:
  • Any type of Broadband from your ISP, even mobile broadband will work fine on your boat!
  • A Hot-Spot NZ router.
  • A suitable place to put it.
  • and to top it off some customers!
  • If I just purchase a WiFi router from a retail store, why can't I just hand out the password to my guests?

This is not a good idea for the following reasons:
  • You have to keep changing the password keys
  • You have no control over how much data they download (you could get a nice big surprise in your next broadband bill from your ISP)
  • Users will most likley have access to your office PCs on your network!
  • Can wifi users connect via their VPN, PDA, wifi phones?

Yes, this is essential in running a successful hotspot.

Can I stop users from hogging my broadband connection with music and movie downloads?

Yes, you can control the upload and download speeds of users as well as blocking certain types of content. You can choose if you want to enable this. Please check with us first.

Do I need a PC to run a hotspot?

No you don't need a PC to run a hotspot at your location. If you want internet kiosks, then you will need PCs for the kiosk computers. Ask us about our internet Kiosks.

How many concurrent users can access the internet at the same time?

In theory, 100 WiFi clients could connect, but this also depends on what users are doing, like watching YouTube, sending emails and the speed of your internet connection. You can also throttle the speed of each users connection, to increase the amount of concurrent users on your wifi hotspot.

What benefit does my business get for providing public internet access?

Offering public internet access with wirless or wired kiosks, is an extra value added service that will make you stand out from your competitors. It has a number of business benefits:
  • Drive more customers to your door.
  • Extra revenue for your business.
  • You can set your own prices, or even provide it for free - perhaps with a cup of coffee.
  • It will encourage customers to stay longer and increase repeat purchases.
