Wireless Mesh Networks
Introduction to self healing Wi-Fi mesh networking
In traditional wireless networks the access point needed to be connected to the internet router by a cable. The access point can normally only be connected wirelessly from about +/-100 meters away. Sure you can attach directional antennas to boost the signal, but you would also have to do the same for the laptop to talk back to the access point. Otherwise the laptop will see the access point but the laptops signal will not have enough power to get back.
We required a solution that would be cost effective, be remotely configured and easy to install. Well those were our main goals and we exceeded them! Most solutions we came across either cost the earth or like WDS use about 50% bandwidth for negotiating the connection / backhaul, and that wasn't good enough for us!
The illustration shows how the wireless signal from the house can make multiple hops to get to the laptop. The mesh is self healing, because if the back building looses its connection to the house, it can make multiple hops to find its way back to the internet, with very little overhead or latency as opposed to WDS.
